Frequently Asked Questions

It is the engineering that determines what a pavement needs underneath the surface: the thickness of asphalt or concrete, the base beneath it, and the subgrade preparation or stabilization below that, based on the traffic loads and the measured properties of the site soils. The surface course gets the attention, but the design lives or dies in the layers under it.

Usually because of what is underneath it. Caliche can be a thin cemented crust over loose material, and collapsible silts and sands lose strength when water reaches them, so a section can settle and crack from below. Add oilfield truck traffic to a section designed for cars and the failure arrives faster. Testing the subgrade and specifying soil stabilization where the data calls for it removes most of that risk before the first load is placed.
